Andy and Paul had originally written a song called Suspicion in July 1987. When Andy couldn't make it to the studio for a few days, Paul added some lyrics finishing the song off. Determined the song was a potential single, the pair wrote a B side.

However, after recording the B side (now called Dreaming), Andy and Paul thought it was actually better than Suspicion. Virgin Records agreed and Dreaming was used as the A side. Suspicion remains unreleased.

This release was described in magazine ads as an "American format CD single" which was accurate because the digipack sleeves had originally been used for a US release of Dreaming.

However, the track listing for the UK version was different from the US release which featured mixes unique to the US, such as the Club Mix which featured additional production work by Bruce Forest and Frank Heller (which also explains why there are additional credits on the sleeve for the UK version not reflected on the CD itself). In fact the track listing for the UK version is identical to the earlier VSCD987 CD release.

The sleeve design was a triple fold-out sleeve that spelt the letters 'OMD'.

Dreaming was the last song the band wrote using the Fairlight CMI.
