Stand Above Me was described by Andy as being "roughly about refusing to be dominated by somebody in a partnership or a relationship or an environment".

In a shrewd move, the 12" mixes of Stand Above Me were initially released as an "anonymous" club issue 12" credited to an act known as 'Liberator'. This idea managed to get OMD into the top 10 of the US dance charts, fooling a lot of DJ's in the process.

The model on the sleeve is a 6ft tall Cherokee from South Dakota called Pahaska. The photo shoot had originally been for the sleeve art for the Liberator album - a sleeve that was rejected due to the steamy nature of the shots.
