The inspiration behind Dream Of Me came while Andy was listening to a CD of the Love Unlimited Orchestra performing Love's Theme. Taking a sample from the original song, Andy began writing a new song.

When Barry White first heard about Andy's sampling of his song he initially gave his permission. However, he later inexplicably withdrew this permission leading to some frantic attempts to rework the song to distance it from the original inspiration. Eventually, they struck a compromise: The single version would be issued minus the original sample while the album version would keep it in.

Apparently, Barry White misheard the lyrics when he first heard Dream Of Me. While the original line went "Had an idea - based on a love theme", Barry White thought Andy was singing "Had an idea - let's start a love theme" and loved the idea of a song that could be applied to anyone: male, female, friends or family.
