Stay With Me demo is totally different than final version

Postby roma_victor » Fri Apr 26, 2013 9:04 pm

If you're curious, here's the demo:

Other than the main synth line, this is almost a completely different song, and with Andy's vocals instead of Paul's.

I didn't care for it at first, but after a few listens this version grew on me - it's actually quite good!
Well, it's one louder, isn't it?

Tthe demo version sounds like an old forgotten 80s italo disco dance track. Crap... but honestly the main melody is a real earplug.

I'll give it a listen, just not so fond of that track. It's not terrible...it's "meh."

Either version of "Stay With Me" is a "schlager." So I'm pretty resistant to its "charms." In Paul's favor, his vocal is pretty good. In Andy's, the lyrics are better. I flip a coin at this point. But I'm happy with hearing both to decide! It's the highlight of the demo CD for me.

Stay With Me passed me by,its a totally forgetable track-as an instrumental its ok,but for me it`s a hark back to the dark days of Crush and The Pacific Age when OMD were trying so hard to be radio friendly in the US.
It`s just so bland, and utterly dull.

Pretty much my reaction to Night Cafe.

"Night Café" gets by with me. The band seem to be of the opinion that it's of "She's Leaving" caliber. Not quite! The arrangement is a bit too facile, but the bitter lyrics help it considerably. The end product is a good juxtaposition. Had the lyrics been as banal as "Stay With Me," the whole thing would collapse like a house of cards for me. "Stay With Me" is sticking in my craw - starting to irritate me. Agreed that it's a "Crush" throwback, although still better than "Hold You!"

I like both the demo and the album version (hell, what's not to like on EE!) but if I had to choose it would be the demo, just prefer Andy's vocals generally.

If you had heard Paul explain the lyrics to 'Stay with Me' your opinion of them would possibly be different. It is about his daughter that he had to leave behind in LA when she was 4 years old when he separated from his wife. The words have a much deeper resonance when you know that they are sung by a father to a 'lost' daughter.

Same issue with the Dresden lyrics... that someone described as trying to equate the bombing of Dresden with having a "tiff with your girlfriend". Really?

Still, you cannot expect everyone to understand everything that you create.

How could we have known that? All I could do is take this song, along with the album, listen with objective ears, and form an opinion. The lyrics do make sense now. For me it's just the over all sound. *shrugs*

Interesting opinions going down here. :)

I don't have a problem with 'Night Cafe' at all... yes, it does remind me in vibe to 84-85 OMD but it's subtle (more in mood than execution... it feels like summer and regret). The demo version is 'fun' but the final version is the 'keeper' :)

I'm not really keen on the 'Stay' demo version but interesting to see what the first draft sounded like. I can understand the reasons folk might not like the album version for being 'too soft' or whatever but I've grown fond of the track and appreciate the sentiment (probably more so that Andy explained the subtext).

'Dresden' still isn't doing it for me, unfortunately I don't think I'm ever going to like this one.

Thanks for the insight, Mr. McCluskey. After watching the DVD, I'm guessing that Paul heard the demo and got inspired to revisit his experiences in regards to the title of the song and then made it into his own. I can now see that the theme of the album was fleshed out by this alternate view of "the future didn't turn out as I expected it to." "Stay With Me" still ultimately sounds too close to Listening Pool for me to work as OMD, even though it sports a McCluskey melody.

Every time I hear SwM I keep thinking I've heard something similar. Then today I remembered what song I was thinking of. This one:
There's a hole in my head with my thoughts pouring through.
