Web-Based Email Addresses, Spambots etc.

Postby PaulB » Tue Feb 22, 2005 8:19 pm

Any potential new people wanting to join the forum should be aware that the OMD site tends to block new registrations from people using web-based email addresses. This includes Hotmail and Yahoo addresses.

This is for several reasons - which includes preventing any potential anonymous types posting offensive messages - an issue that regular visitors will know we've had on the OMD Forum in the past.

Also, spammers are getting ever more adventrous in their methods for plying their wares - and looking for ways to bump up their search engine ratings. This includes registering on forums with generic names and whacking a spam URL in their profile.

If you're planning to register on the forum then be aware that we flag up the web-based email issue quite clearly on the registration page.

Sorry if this inconveniences genuine OMD fans who wish to post. 9 times out of 10 we can sort things out for those genuine people behind the scenes so feel free to email the site with any queries.

QUESTION: What if Yahoo/Hotmail e-mail address is THE ONLY ONE address you have??????????????????

It´s easy to demand to have *some other e-mail address* if you´ve got omd.co.uk address yourself Paul!!

Not everyone has some company based e-mail addy!

Most people will have an ISP email address - which is pretty standard for any provider.

Its pretty simple... say you dial up to the internet with lets say BT, as an example, when you sign up with BT, you also get given a e-mail addy. Now in geeks terms BT will be your "ISP" so you dial/connect with BT and then you can use the e-mail addy that you have been given... it really is as simple as that.

Since this forum stopped people with free host email accounts, a lot of the "nonsense" with muppets trying to destroy the OMD community has now gone.

*Bumped for Great Justice*

For some reason the site is being plagued with a fresh batch of spambots. Hopefully I've banned them permanently but time will tell.

Also, we're still getting newbies registering with Hotmail/Yahoo-type addresses. You are not going to get on the forum I'm afraid and this issue is flagged up on the registration screen and elsewhere.

*Revival of old threads*

A reminder that we block web-based email addresses for people registering on the forum.

Also, there was at least one person who registered in the past day or so with a genuine ISP-supplied address - and was then promptly cast out with today's batch of spambots! If this was you then please email me or re-register so I can activate your account. and apologies!

I was wondering why the number of registered users fluctuates so much.

The forum gets hammered on a daily basis by spambots, hence the blocks on email addresses. It's a daily chore to delete them all, so the user list will go up and down accordingly. 8)

Always wondered why they never replied to my PM's especially 'get_viagranow' and 'misstitwank'.
