Cosmicity is Mark Nicholas, a former student at The University of Michigan School of Music where he studied music and technology. After a series of bands formed with school friends, Mark formed a two-piece synthpop outfit called My Friend Wendy before deciding to blaze his own trail, forming Cosmicity ( a combination of 'cosmic' and 'electricity') in the process. Cosmicity produced a series of self-produced cassettes from 1992 onwards before releasing a CD in 1994. Cosmicity's latest release is called The Binary Language Of Love along with a 2 CD remix album Resynthesized. |

Sum up Cosmicity in three words dreamy synthpop goodness How did you first discover OMD? I first discovered OMD when, at the age of 14, my friend David played me "Tesla Girls" from the vinyl record of "Junk Culture". I was hooked right away. It took me a little longer to like some of the more unusual OMD stuff... stuff from Dazzle Ships and the Orange album (it's not always orange, though...) but now I love it all. Why did you choose to cover Bloc Bloc Bloc? Well, my original choice was "Hold You" (or "Hold On" as it's printed on the American version of "Crush") but Color Theory had already snagged that track. Good thing I'm friends with Brian of Color Theory, or we would have both done it! So, I went looking for an OMD song that would sound fairly different when it was done strictly on synthesizers and also a song that was really fun. "Bloc Bloc Bloc" seemed the way to go - even more so because of the reference to Detroit in the lyrics of the first verse. That's where I'm from! What other artists and music are you into? I'm a bit stuck in the 80's... OMD, PSB, DM, Erasure, New Order... that's all still my favorite stuff. If I'm picking from current options, hmmm... that's tough! I'll say this. I've had Dido, Color Theory and Underworld in my CD player this week. ;-)Do you have any other favourite OMD songs? All of them! It's easier to say my favorite albums: The Pacific Age, Crush and Sugar Tax.What plans have you got for Cosmicity in the future? I'm working on a new album called "Pure" which, so far, I'm really happy with. I think people will really enjoy it. I'm also going to be doing some live appearances, in Mexico in March and at Synthcon in Hollywood, CA in May. |
